1. Diplomatic raw between Russia and the UK

When the story broke out at the end of last year, it got my interest straightaway: an ex-KGB officer living in the UK poisoned by some radioactive matter, that doesn’t quite happen everyday.
But back then I really thought that either the British or the Russians would do their best to cover up the story and smoothen things.

I wrote on this very blog on December 1st, 2006:
“ Russia, being such a big oil provider, enjoys a very strong strategic position and I doubt the UK is going to jeopardize its diplomatic relations over this.”

Well I was very wrong, the UK has carried out the investigation and is asking for Lugovoi, the main suspect, to be extradited, which Russia categorically refuses.
Today, Russia announced that it would expel four UK diplomats.

So far, Russia’s reaction was sort of predictable and they haven’t changed their stance since the beginning of the case. I never thought the UK would go that far in pushing for the extradition. I’ll definitely keep an eye on this.
